Leonard was a history buff, amateur archeologist, and most certainly a treasure hunter. He studied old maps and documents to locate lost treasures. His most important and famous one is the Tunica Treasure. He also studied the changes in the course of the Mississippi River and helped locate the wrecked ship; The Ben Shrod in Mississippi. He was living in Utah where he was exploring lost and buried treasures of the Spanish. Many locations he explored were in Arizona and Utah.

Leonard and Ms. Sue Eakin were very close friends. They both were interested in LA History and discussed many changes in the course of rivers and how it affected early settlers and Indian tribes. Ms. Eakin was a close mentor to Leonard and showed him how to study maps and river directions.
