Judge Harold Jude Brouillette (retired), 85, a life-long resident of Marksville, LA, passed away on February 23, 2016 surrounded by his children. He is pre-deceased by his wife, Ethel Horner Brouillette; parents, James O. Brouillette and Ezole Bordelon Brouillette; brother James O. Brouillette Jr.; and sister Katherine B. Riser. He is survived by three children, Mary Brouillette of Dallas, TX; Benjamin J. Brouillette of Baton Rouge, LA: Carol Brouillette Fromm of Chicago, IL; and three grandchildren, Heidi Fromm, Paul Fromm and Benjamin J. Brouillette Jr.
Brouillette graduated from Louisiana State University Law School with honors in 1954, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the LSU Law Review and was selected outstanding law student of the graduating class of 1954. He also served as Chief Justice of the Honor Court. He was law clerk to Dean Paul Hebert for whom the LSU Law Center is named.
Brouillette then served in the U.S. Army's Judge Advocate General Corps. He practiced law in New Orleans, LA, Baton Rouge, LA and Marksville, LA, where he was elected district court judge in 1984. He was selected by the Louisiana Law Institute to coauthor The Children's Code, approved by the Louisiana legislature, giving inalienable rights to all children in Louisiana. He continued to work diligently in child advocacy through legal organizations and through developing programs used across the nation to protect the rights and needs of children.
Upon retirement Brouillette continued to serve the Louisiana Supreme Court as an ad hoc judge and was an active community volunteer. He was an adjunct faculty member of the LSU Law School. The American Correctional Association named him "Best in Business" in 2008 for the educational programs he developed and taught to offenders in Avoyelles Parish facilities prior to their release.
Judge Harold Brouillette was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and public servant, tireless in his pursuit of justice.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Marksville, 445 West Bontempt Street. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9-11 a.m.
