April 2, 1934 – May 30, 2025
A Mass of Christian Burial for Burton Newton will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with Rev. Blake Deshautelle officiating. Burton Newton, age 91, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025 surrounded by many loved ones.
Burton was born to Frederick Newton, Jr. and his wife Bessie Bordelon on April 2, 1934. He attended the University of Louisiana in Lafayette where he received a degree in Agronomy and met the love of his life, Estelle Sutton.
As soon as Burton finished college he was drafted into the Army and served in Korea. Upon his return in 1958, he started L & B Newton Farms with his brother Lloyd. The brothers were very successful, gaining many awards including Farmer of the Year and the Sugar Cane High Yield award. Burton passed his farming prowess to his son Michael, who became a very accomplished farmer in his own right.
Burton retired from farming at the age of 70 and focused on his true passions, hunting and fishing. He loved to hunt ducks, deer, squirrels and quail with family and friends.
Burton was a hardworking, fun-loving person with a heart of gold and an amazing sense of humor. He had a wonderful 58 year marriage to Estelle, which ended with her passing in 2016. His five children were blessed to have such a supportive and loving father.
Burton was one of a kind and will be sorely missed by many.
Survivors include his children, Karen N. Kojis of Evergreen, Michael and Christine Newton of Bunkie, Paula and T.J. Thomas of Kinston, NC, Ellen and Frederick Payne of Amite, Laura and John Hogg of Natchitoches; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, his brother, Lloyd Newton and wife Nancy of Bunkie.
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Amy Whipple who, for the last 9 years of his life, was Burton's constant companion. Amy was very special to Burton and made his last years so enjoyable. Her presence in his life was such a blessing.
We would also like to thank Kasey Gill, APRN, FNP at Hematology Oncology Clinic in Alexandria for her compassionate care.
Serving as pallbearers are Burton's grandsons: Luke, Ben and Scott Kojis, Morgan Newton, Joseph Thomas, Garrett and Grant Payne, and Carter Hogg.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Anthony Catholic School in Bunkie would be welcomed.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at Hixson-Ducote Funeral Home of Bunkie.
