Funeral services for Betty Slocum Ray will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at Beulah Baptist Church in Cheneyville, LA with the Pastor Billy Tingle officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00am until the time of service at 11:00am. Burial will follow in the Trinity Episcopal Cemetery in Cheneyville with Roy (Butch) Linzay providing additional words of comfort. The family is not planning a funeral reception. Arrangements are under the direction of Hixson-Ducote Funeral Home of Bunkie.
Mrs. Ray, age 84, passed away on July 11, 2022. She was a beloved resident of Cheneyville since 1954 and at one time was nicknamed 'Mayor of Cheneyville' for her efforts to organize and clean up the town to win the contest of Cleanest City in Louisiana in 2004. She was known for her extraordinary cooking and baking skills, and generously sharing and caring for others in the community.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John Ed Ray, Jr.; her mother, Pearl Slocum; father, Roy Slocum of Lone Pine; brother Roy Slocum, Jr; sisters Catherine Slocum; Margaret Miles; Patricia (Tiny) McDaniels; beloved uncle and aunt Reginald and Hilma Slocum; and first cousin Gary Slocum.
Survivors include her two children, Keith Ray of Cheneyville, LA and Janet Ray (Joe Gallagher) of Annapolis, MD; a sister, Linda Cole of Albany, Oregon; beloved first cousins Sherry Slocum Smith of Belzoni, MS; Marilyn Slocum Litton of Lone Pine and many other family and friends dear to her.
Pallbearers will be Mark Basco, Derek Basco, Colby Basco, J.D. Guillory, Jason Little, and Roy Linzay, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beulah Baptist Church, P. O. Box 356, Cheneyville, LA 71325 or Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 223, Cheneyville, LA 71325.
